The town holds the unique distinction of being established twice within the space of 12 years. It was founded by Sir Benjamin D'Urban, a governor of the Cape Colony after the War of the Hintsa (1834-1835). The area was, however, handed back to the Axe (1846-1847); the town was re-established by the new governor, Sir Harry Smith. At one stage the town was the administrative, military, economic and educational centre of British Kaffraria.
