On the shores of Simon's Bay on the Cape Peninsula, Simon's Town was named after Governor Simon van der Stel who explored the bay in 1687 and recommended its use as a winter anchorage. It was the South Atlantic naval base for Britain's Royal Navy from 1814 to 1957, when it was handed over to the South African Navy. It has a statue that honours a famous dog, a Great Dane known as Able Seaman Just Nuisance, who befriended sailors during the Second World War.
