Bloemhof was established on the farm Klipfontein on the banks of the Vaal River in 1864. It was named by John Barkley, an HMS Birkenhead survivor, after his enchantment with the flowers growing in the settlement gardens. A maize and cattle farming centre with three nature reserves in the area. Bloemhof Dam is one of thirteen dams in the Vaal River System.
