Founded in 1863 as a church centre on a portion of the farm Rietfontein. Named after Sir Philip Wodehouse, Governor of the Cape Colony 1862 - 1870.
The sandstone building of the Reformed Church in the centre of town was built in 1864 and is a national monument.
Numerous fine specimens of Karoo style cottages, many more than a 100 years old, can be seen along the towns streets.
