INTRODUCTION

The Wild Coast is renowned for its rugged coastline and crushing seas. There are many unexplored areas and long deserted beaches of fine, white sand. The continental shelf drops very steeply close to shore which can result in awesome waves and unpredictable sea moods. There are untouched forests left in some protected areas but even the natural beach bush is still vigorous and thick. One can really smell the sea, and the purity of air is a delight if you have been surviving in a city.

The Wild Coast, the coastal part of the former "independent" republic of Transkei, now a micro part of the greater Eastern Cape Province, boasts some of the finest undisturbed coastlines of Southern Africa. In an attempt to protect some of these areas rich in flora and fauna, a number of reserves have been established, both on the coastline as well as in the interior.
