IB Robinson bought the farm Randfontein in 1889 and established the Randfontein Estates Gold Mining Company. The town was created in 1890 to serve the new mine and was administered by Krugersdorp until it became a municipality in 1929. Much has changed since the early days and Randfontein is now a large industrial and residential centre on the West Rand.
